Pool deck renovation in Houston

Decorative concrete resurfaced or expanded around the water.

Chapter 01

Why Houston pool decks crack and heave

A pool deck is a slab sitting on Houston clay, and that clay swells when it is wet and shrinks when it dries. The slab moves a little every season. After a few summers the control joints open, hairline cracks run toward the coping, and one panel sits a half inch higher than its neighbour. That raised edge is where bare feet catch.

Heat does the rest. A deck that was sealed once and never again loses its surface first: the stamped texture wears smooth, the colour goes chalky, and small flakes lift off in a process called spalling. Smooth and wet is the wrong combination around a pool, and a surface that holds the afternoon sun is hard to cross barefoot.

The damage that matters most is the part you cannot see. A cracked deck lets rain and splash-out run under the slab, which washes out the base and can undermine the shell collar. The deck and pool settle at different rates, and the gap between them is often where a leak starts. That is why deck leveling and pool leveling sit on our repair list next to the renovation work.

Resurfacing, expanding, and leveling the deck

We start with the slab, not the surface. Cracks are routed and filled, failed joints are cut out and re-caulked, and any panel that has dropped or heaved is leveled before anything goes on top. Pouring a new finish over a moving slab only hides the problem for a season.

Resurfacing then follows in stages: the old coating is ground or blasted off, the slab is cleaned and primed, and a decorative concrete overlay is applied and textured. The finish is chosen to be slip-resistant when wet and to stay cooler underfoot than a dark, smooth pour. Stamped patterns, broomed textures and colour-integrated mixes are all options, and we show you the sample against your coping before it goes down.

Expanding the deck is a different job. Forms are set, the base is compacted, steel is tied in, and the new slab is joined to the old one with proper expansion joints so the two can move independently. Stone around the pool, such as travertine, gets cleaned and sealed so it stops drinking water and staining. If the project reaches past the pool edge into the rest of the backyard, we handle the hardscape side of it and leave the planting to others.

Chapter 03

What a skipped deck repair costs later

A deck that is left alone does not stay the same. Open cracks collect water, water softens the base, and a one-panel repair becomes a lift-and-replace. Meanwhile the pool shell feels every move in the slab around it. Catching it at the hairline stage is the cheapest time to act, and the quote is free.

You can tell a deck needs attention again when water pools in the same low spot after rain, when the sealer stops beading, when the colour fades in the sun-facing half, or when you see sand-like grit on the surface. Any of those means the finish has gone thin.

We resurface and expand pool decks across Houston, including Katy, The Woodlands and out toward Galveston.
